One of the better known states in India due to its capital, Mumbai, which used to be Bombay, Maharashtra is the location for the growing Bollywood movie industry. It is where the British Raj-era Gateway of India monument as well as Elephanta Island with its famous cave temple. Almost 78 percent of Maharashtra is Hindu while almost 14 percent are Islamic. Almost six percent of the population practices Buddhism.

The General Administration Department of Maharashtra approves all public holidays in the state in cooperation with the Government of India. Some of the holidays declared are celebrated throughout India. Republic Day honours the date on which the Constitution of India came into force. Independence Day is observed throughout the country on August 15. It commemorates India’s independence from the British Empire in 1947. Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated on October 2 in honour of the Father of India, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi who is better known as Mahatma Gandhi or Bapuji. He was the spiritual leader and played a critical role in the independence of India.

Other holidays in Maharashtra are related to the culture, history and religion of the citizens of the state. Mabashivratri, Holi and Ram Navmi are celebrated in the state as well as Dasara, Moharum and Diwali.
