Madhya Pradesh has many landmarks remaining from throughout the history of India. It is also well known for its Bengal tiger sanctuaries and guided safaris. Almost 91 percent of the state practice Hinduism while Muslims account for almost seven percent. The high number of Hindu and Muslim citizens are the main reason that public holidays in Madhya Pradesh are related to those religions.

Like other states in India, several public holidays are those celebrated throughout the country. These include Republic Day, Independence Day and Christmas Day. On these days, government offices, schools and many businesses are closed. Other holidays are specific to Madhya Pradesh and are related to either the Hindu or Muslim calendar. These holidays include Raksha Banahan, Durga Puja/Dussehra and Diwali. Several holidays in Madhya Pradesh are to commemorate the birthdays of prophets, including Milad-un Nabi. Throughout India, Mahatma Ghandi’s birthday is celebrated as a public holiday as well.

Other holidays celebrated in Madhya Pradesh include the End of Ramadan, Vasishnava and the Feast of Sacrifice. There may also be regional holidays where businesses and offices may be closed in order to enjoy festivals and other commemorations.
