Bank holidays in Himachal Pradesh are approved by the government of the state as well as the Indian government. Although there are holidays that are celebrated throughout India, such as Independence Day, Republic Day and Gandhi’s birthday, other holidays are determined by each state with Himachal Pradesh no exception. In Himachal Pradesh some of these holidays relate to the history and culture of the state while others represent religious celebrations that relate to Hindu, Muslim and Buddhist beliefs.
Himachal Pradesh also recognises three holidays that are specifically for women. On these holidays, all female employees working in government offices, educational institutions and private companies are provided paid holidays.
Raksha Bandhan is an ancient Hindu festival that celebrates the love and duty between brothers and sisters. Karva Chauth is a one-day festival celebrated by Hindu women in which married women fast from sunrise to moonrise in order to promote safety and longevity in their husbands. Bhai Duj is celebrated on the last day of Diwali or Tihar. Women mark the forehead of their brothers and the brothers lavish the sisters with gifts in recognition of brotherly-sisterly love.
