Because the islands are controlled by India, the Indian government determines what holidays are considered official. Many of the holidays celebrated are related to Hindu celebrations, although some are based on other religions as well as significant political moments in the nation’s history.

Announcement of the holidays for the upcoming year are normally released at the end of September each year. The government releases three annual listings. One is known as the General Holidays listing, although it is sometimes called bank holidays or Gazetted Holidays. Another is the list of Restricted Holidays which is related to the religious holidays recognised. The final list is known as the Bank Holidays list and it indicates when banks are closed each year.
