It is believed that Chhattisgarh gets its name from the 36 ancient forts that existed in the area since “chhattis” means 36 and “garh” means fort, although some historians believe the name is a corrupted form of Chedisgarh, or “Empire of the Chedis” since the area was part of the Chedi dynasty during ancient times. The 2011 census indicated that over 93 percent of the population practiced Hinduism with only two percent reporting as Muslim and one percent reporting as Christian. Other religions in the area include Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism or the indigenous religion, Sarnaism.
Public holidays in Chhattisgarh are determined by the government and many of them are related to the religions practiced in the area. Mahavir Javanti is one of the most important holidays in the practice of Jainism and is a public holiday in Chhattisgarh. The birth of Buddha is also a public holiday as is Guru Nanak’s birthday who is believed to be the founder of Sikhism.
