Tripura Public Holidays 2017

This page contains a calendar of all 2017 Tripura public holidays. Please scroll down to view.

There is only one major highway that links the rest of India with Tripura mostly due to the five mountain ranges that run north to south in the state. Because it is geographically isolated, the state is very rural with limited infrastructure. Festivals and other celebrations are based in the Bengali culture as Bengali Hindu people form the biggest majority in Tripura.

Public holidays in Tripura are determined each year by the General Administration Department of the Tripura Government. Under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instrument Act 1881, the government approves holidays where schools, offices and businesses are closed. Republic Day, Independence Day and Mahatma Ghandi’s birthday are all public holidays in Tripura as these are holidays celebrated throughout India.

Other holidays approved by the government are based in culture and religion. Garia Puja is held on the seventh day of the month of Vaishakha and is designed to honour Lord Garia, the god of livestock, peace, children and wealth. Mahalaya is observed seven days before Durga Puja, celebrating the advent of Durga, goddess of supreme power. Lakshimi Puja is a Hindu festival showing reverence to the goddess Lakshmi while Kali Puja celebrates the goddess Kali and is celebrated on the new moon of the Hindu month Kartik.
