Located in southwest India, Goa is bordered by Maharashtra, Karnataka and the Arabian Sea. It is the smallest state in India and still has a strong Portuguese influence as it was controlled by that country for centuries. According to the 2011 census, 66 percent of the population is Hindu while over 26 percent were Christian. About eight percent of the state is Muslim. Public holidays in the country, which are determined by the General Administration Department of the Government of Goa, reflect the religious beliefs of those who reside in the state.
Goa lists holidays in four separate categories. Annexure I holidays are public holidays with government offices and business closed. These holidays include Republic Day, May Day and Diwali. Annexure II holidays are considered special holidays. Unless special holidays fall on a Saturday or Sunday, government offices remain open on those dates.
There are only two holidays included in Annexure II – Mahashivratri and Milad-Un-Nabi. Annexure III are restricted holidays and employees may choose two of them as a paid holiday. These include Ram Navami, Hartalika and Onam. Annexure IV includes holidays that are considered commercial and industrial holidays. These include Birth Anniversary of Dr. Babaasahcb Amebedkr, Independende Day and Christmas Day.
