Bihar Public Holidays 2016 and 2017

We currently have public holidays for 2016 and 2017 listed. Scroll down to view.

Bihar is a completely land-locked state in India, although access to the port of Kolkata is not far. It is midway between West Bengal and Utter Pradesh, providing a transitional climate, economy and culture. Like the rest of India, festivals are very important in Bihar and many of these festivals are named public holidays in the state, all of which are determined by the Bihar government.

Worshipping the ‘sun god’ has a very strong history in India and Bihar is no exception. Chatth Puja is the only festival that celebrates the setting sun. It is celebrated twice each year. The first is in Chaitra, according to the Hindu calendar, celebrated in March while the other is Kartik which is in November. According to the official public holidays calendar issued by the Bihar government, the celebration in March is known as Holi while the celebration in November is known as Chhath Puja. Each festival lasts two days.

Ram Navami is a Hindu festival that is also considered a public holiday in Bihar. It celebrates the birth of the lord RAMA and many people celebrate by fasting or offering prayers. Diwali is the Festival of Lights, celebrated in October, while Bakri Id/Idu’l Zuha is the Feast of the Sacrifice, celebrated in September.
